Hardwood Flooring Buying Guide | Grades of Hardwood
Tavern/Rustic Grade Hardwood
- Many knots, cracks, and splits (surface imperfections are not filled).
- Short Lengths of boards.
- Wide range of board colors.
- This grade of hardwood was created to be a budget friendly way for home renovators to lay hardwood.
- multiple boces must be mixed at a time to ensure the consistency of look throughout the flooring.
- Order 20% more than your calculated needs to ensure you will have enough "good" pieces to finish your flooring.
Horizon Grade Hardwood
- Many knots, cracks and splits (surface imperfections are filled).
- Only small knots are allowed, large knots are removed from grade.
- Medium lengths of boards.
- Wide range of board colors. Slightly less prominent than Tavern Grade.
- Be sure to order the usual 10-15% more than your calculated needs to ensure you have enough to finish your installation.
Natural Grade Hardwood
- Very few surface imperfections.
- Only select knots are allowed in the boards.
- Color of board will vary due to natural colors of wood. Will vary less than horizon grade.
- Medium lengths of boards.
- Be sure to order the usual 10-15% more than your calculated need to ensure you have enough to finish your installation.
Select Grade Hardwood
- Highest Grade of Hardwood.
- No surface imperfections.
- Only knots smaller than 1/16 inch are allowed in the boards.
- Long length of boards.
- More uniform color throughout flooring.
- Order 10% more than your calculated needs to ensure you have enough to finish your installation.
